This past Monday, Sept. 9, the Junior Varsity football team hosted their first game of the season against Bishop Caroll. Sophomore defensive end, Jonathan Wagner, and freshman quarterback, Ayden Beach, share their insight on the game, the team’s victory, and the season’s expectations.
How did you feel about the performance during the game?
Wagner: “I think we did good, I got a sack and we still won the game.”
Beach: “Yeah, I feel like I myself did good but I could’ve been better as a teammate.”
What was the final score?
“20 to 7”
What are some things you’re excited about this football season?
Wagner: “How much better we are than last year and how we progressed, I think we’re gonna win a whole lot more.”
Beach: “I’m mainly looking forward to playing with my old teammates from Goddard.”
Do you feel like the team gets along well? What are some of the teams’ faults?
Wagner: “Yeah, regardless of personal stuff we always work as a team. I think our communication with our offense can be worked on but we work well together.”
Beach: “I agree with John, for the most part. There’s definitely a lot of competitiveness but when it comes to being on the field we get along.”
Would you say everyone is content with being on JV?
Wagner: “Yeah I feel like we all definitely appreciate it, majority of us are here because of us moving up from last year and we’re all grateful to be part of the team together.”
Beach: “I feel like amongst the freshman, we’re all aiming to play at a higher level like varsity but we’re all comfortable with where we’re at.”
Do you consider it a challenge to balance both football and your academics?
Wagner: “For me personally, it is a challenge. [With] honors classes the work is hard to keep up with but as a whole, we all do pretty well at keeping up with work so we can stay on the team.”
Beach: “Yeah, very much a challenge to keep up with the school part.”
