Alexa Demie and Kelvin Harrison play two teenage kids going through relationship, friendship, social, and family drama in 2019’s “Waves.” I think this movie is more of an emotional film; it can be very emotional and toxic. Depending on if you went through something like it, it could determine how you view the movie. They go through loss, love, forgiveness, all sorts of emotions in one movie. It is a movie I have continuously rewatched. “Waves” is a 10 out of 10 movie.
The first few events in the movie begin with Tyler (Kelvin Harrison) having trouble with wrestling because of an injury with his back/shoulder. He soon begins to just become an angry enraged person throughout the movie. He just gets worse because of all the stress on him. His girlfriend Alexis (Alexa Demie) and he were having a normal relationship and healthy relationship until they started to have some trouble. Their relationship starts to become controlling, toxic, verbally and physically abusive. So, if you can’t deal with that type of stuff I wouldn’t recommend this movie for you. The suspense of the movie starts really quickly.
Though the movie has a very good and interesting first half, I don’t think the second half of the movie is as good. After everyone goes through a tough, tragic loss, the movie shifts towards Tyler’s younger sister, Emily. She is almost completely emotionally and physically shut down from it (the loss). It is a very quiet part of the movie with very few suspenseful scenes, less than the first part at least. It is way calmer. As I said, she is going through a loss, so it just shows her relieving, experiencing, growing, being in a sad state of mind, etc.
On the music topic, I think Waves has an amazing soundtrack. They use the artists Tyler the Creator, Asap Rocky, Frank Ocean, and Kendrick Lamar. I think the songs they used in the movie really describe the mood/feeling really well.
Overall, I think Waves is a good movie and I recommend watching it for teens. It is so greatly written, directed, and acted. The actors suit the characters so well and that is one of the reasons I think it is such a great movie; it makes it more interesting and entertaining.
