For the first time in many years Northwest High School is bringing back the Science Olympiad team, and in such a short time span they’ve already achieved so much. The club is run by Sarah El-Sukar and they meet Wednesdays after school. Science Olympiad focuses on the STEM disciplines of science technology and pushes students to gain a deeper understanding of it.
“Students compete in about 22-23 events, I can’t remember the exact number, but some of them are taking tests, some are like geological mapping, and some are more biology focused,” said El-Sukar.
Students who are interested in the STEM field, but want a more hands on approach also have the option to do building labs. They can build different types of transportation models and test how well they perform.
“These events are all tailored to what students might be interested in, currently we have 12 members, because of Kansas guidelines we can only have 15 and I’d be willing to take 3 more to alleviate the workload on the students,” added El-Sukar.
Currently for this season the team only has one senior, Myia Havey. In her words, this is how she describes her experience with the club.
“Science Olympiads is an organization that aims to help participants gain a really niche and in-depth understanding of various science topics,” Havey said.
Havey has also proven to be a great performer for the team,
“On our last tournament I placed in first and second place for the two events I competed in,” added Havey.
Overall the team competed in 23 events and together they placed in third place during their last invitational at Wuchita Heights, and individually this is how the scores came out:
- Anya Uyesato and Myia Havey placed first in Anatomy.
- Anyya Uyesato, Jenna Cain, and Nick Njorge placed 1st in Codebusters.
- Myia Havey and Brighton Diehmer scored 2nd in Astronomy.
- Porter Ross and Ethan Hallinger scored 2nd in Wind Power and Flight.
- Makayla Milton scored 2nd in Forestry.
- Peyton Barnes and Kai Zoeller scored 3rd in Ecology.
- Makayla Milton and Anya Uyesato scored 3rd in Disease Detectives.
